How to Keep Your Company Uniforms Clean

How to Keep Your Company Uniforms Clean

You will always know that your employees have uniforms to wear, that those uniforms are sanitary and look good, and that your business is adhering to any applicable OSHA or safety standards.

If you’re considering instituting a uniform for your employees, there is a lot that goes into the decision. First, different industries have different uniform needs, so this will definitely influence some of the decision. Next, you’re going to need to decide how you will supply your uniform. Will you buy them, will your employees buy them, or will you rent? Finally, you need to decide how they will be kept clean. This is an important consideration if you want to get the most benefits out of a uniform.

Have Your Employees Wash Them

This is the least work-intensive solution for you since it passes all of the work on to your employee, but it may not be the best solution. To start with, you want to make your uniform policy as easy on your employees as possible for maximum compliance. Making them buy and wash their own uniforms could be a burden. It can also pose a problem for uniform longevity. If your uniform materials require special laundering methods or products, you can’t be sure they will get them in your employee’s home. For instance, if your uniforms have chemical or fire resistance, they may not even get clean in a home washer. Finally, if they’re being cleaned at home, you won’t have any control over how often they are cleaned and how clean they look, which could negatively impact your brand.

Wash Them In-House

This is a great option if you have the space and time for it. One of the biggest benefits is that it prevents employees from tracking contaminants home with them, or introducing cross-contaminants on the uniform that they bring back to work. This can also be a very expensive option, however. You will need to invest heavy-duty laundry equipment (unless you already have it), and give up valuable floor space to a washing set up. You will also need to hire someone to manage the cleaning and service the machines or carve time out of your day to do it yourself.

Hire a Service To Wash Them

This is often the best option, even if it seems like the most expensive on the surface. There is an ongoing cost of having a laundry service, but the end result is that you have less to worry about. You will always know that your employees have uniforms to wear, that those uniforms are sanitary and look good, and that your business is adhering to any applicable OSHA or safety standards.
