Tips for Layering with a Work Uniform

As winter approaches, you may find yourself layering your work uniform to stay warm. Do it right to maintain a professional look.

As we head into the winter months, businesses that require work uniforms to be worn by their employees are starting to feel some struggles. After all, the uniform is part of the job—but it sure is getting cold out there! However, there are ways to put together a smart outfit that layers your work uniform and helps you stay warm all winter long.

We have all the tips you need for uniform layering.

Always Use a Base Layer

A base layer is the first layer you put on. It sets the tone for how you build layers to stay warm on top of it. Today, technology has come pretty far in terms of offering garments that will trap heat, move with you, and wick moisture, which results in comfort and warmth all day, every day. Make these tops, socks, and bottoms your second skin under your work uniform and enjoy warmer work days ahead.

There are so many options out there, from thermal crew necks to the warmest socks you’ll ever find, so look around for a good base layer to start off your work uniform layering.

Start Small, End Bulky

Typically, you’re going to want to run your layers from thinnest to thickest or tightest to roomiest. Bulk might not be an issue for your job—some outdoor jobs are fine with having a few extra layers, so 6 layers on top and 3 on bottom could actually be feasible!

For most people though, you’re going to want to think about comfort in addition to your warmth. If you’re going to have a few under layers on, see if you can get a sized-up work uniform so that you have plenty of room for those additional layers.

Consider Transitional Items

It isn’t uncommon for the temperature of both your body and environment to fluctuate throughout a workday. You might spend half of your day in a frigid warehouse and the other half in a warm office. That’s why it’s important to consider transitioning between these spaces when picking your work uniform layers.

A company zip-up can be a big help as you can put it on top and take it off whenever needed. If you have to wear a company shirt, consider wearing two so you can slip one off whenever it starts to get warm! If you’re layering your uniform, think about how your workday actually tends to go and how you choose to layer will start to become clear.
