How Do High Visibility Uniforms Work?

High visibility uniforms provide increased security for your employees.

High visibility uniforms are an essential safety feature for those working in various industries. Construction, road, and factory workers gain added protection when they wear these kinds of uniforms on the job. Have you ever wondered how high visibility uniforms work? Today we’ll discuss the science behind the reflectors and other aspects of high visibility uniforms.

Tiny Reflectors

High visibility uniforms utilize things within a band of tape called retroreflectives. These are tiny glass balls that reflect light back to the source. The angles usually involved are very tight, meaning that the retroreflectives usually can only reflect back to an observer within a small range. This has some obvious benefits but also creates drawbacks. The reflection is lower if the observer is off-angle from the direction of the light. However, the tiny beads of glass can be made in such a way as to diffuse the reflective light – this diminishes the intensity, but increases the viewing angle of the reflected light, making it more easily seen. Retroreflectives tend to be more effective in nighttime conditions than daytime.

Fluorescent Coloring

One way to offset the drawbacks of retroreflectives is by utilizing fluorescent colors in the high visibility uniforms. The ultraviolet rays of the sun react with the colors to make them look like they are glowing. This increases daytime visibility, but it is not as effective for overcast conditions or at night. Yellow and orange are the typical fluorescent colors you would use for uniforms, and these are typically seen on the uniforms of construction workers.

The Materials of High Visibility Uniforms

As mentioned before, the band of tape that uses retroreflectives uses tiny glass beads. This is called, amazingly, glass bead tape! It is inexpensive and easily added to uniform garments. Other reflective materials are usually made out of a special plastic vinyl. This is called microprismatic retro-reflective tape. Although this material  is a little more costly to make, it is very durable and looks good. It is very customizable and can even be produced with a holographic effect!
